Are you aware of your Breast Implant Warranties?

Posted on March 28, 2011 at 12:03 pm

Patients with breast implants can expect to replace the implants at some point, either due to device failure or because of body changes; weight gain/loss, aging and gravity all have their effects on the appearance of your implants. It’s nice to know that, unlike orthopedic companies, which do not offer warranties on knee or hip replacements, both Allergan and Mentor Corp. (whom combined sell 99% of all breast implants in the United States) offer lifetime replacements on their failed implants. As both Allergan and Johnson & Johnson (owner of Mentor Corp.) are huge multinational companies, patients with these implants have a good deal of security if their devices fail and they need replacements.

Neither Mentor nor Allergan covers all the costs associated with the replacement of their implants, but they do have a fairly generous standard program:

  • 10 years of guaranteed financial assistance
  • Up to $2400 in out-of-pocket expenses for surgical fees, operating room and anesthesia expenses not covered by insurance
  • Silicone filled and saline filled breast implants are both covered
  • Lifetime product replacement
  • Automatic enrollment at the time of your original surgery

If a saline implant breaks, you can usually up-grade to a silicone for a modest cost (about $400 per implant).

Dr. LoVerme Enhances Online Patient Experience with Facebook

Dr. LoVerme Implements Social Networking at Practice

At his New Jersey plastic surgery practice, The LoVerme Center, Dr. Paul LoVerme has joined the aesthetic healthcare social media revolution to enhance patient communication and the patient-doctor relationship. Dr. LoVerme says he hopes patients will embrace the practice’s multi-layered online community, whether they are searching for more information on a particular cosmetic procedure, or hoping to connect with fellow patients following a procedure such as BOTOX injections ® or breast augmentation in New Jersey.

Paul LoVerme, MD, a board-certified plastic surgeon in New Jersey, is joining the aesthetic healthcare social media arena because he says he believes it will strengthen the overall patient-doctor relationship and streamline his practice’s ability to communicate with its patients in real-time. Dr. LoVerme says he hopes the practice’s new social network will provide an educational resource for current and potential patients to rely on when researching various cosmetic enhancement procedures, ranging from nonsurgical facial rejuvenation to rapid recovery breast augmentation and liposuction.

By incorporating and maintaining a strong presence on a number of stages online, such as Facebook, and a practice blog, Dr. LoVerme says he and The LoVerme Center team will be able to communicate with patients and support their informational needs more effectively. He says he understands the significant commitment involved in deciding to undergo cosmetic enhancement, which is why he hopes to provide a complete resource dedicated to educating patients to further develop their cosmetic surgery expectations. Dr. LoVerme says combining the comprehensive procedural descriptions contained within his website with the firsthand experience available through active participation in the LoVerme Center social network can provide that type of support.

Dr. LoVerme says patients can begin their research into the realm of possibility inherent in the aesthetic enhancement industry—ranging from the dramatic transformations available with procedures such as liposuction and or a tummy tuck, to more subtle, nonsurgical cosmetic enhancements with dermal fillers or BOTOX Cosmetic®—on his practice’s new social media communities. Ultimately, he says his desire to create these communities lies in his dedication to strengthening the patient-doctor relationship and improving overall patient care: “One of the things that sets my practice apart is the belief that an educated person makes a much better patient. Enhancing one’s appearance is a journey, and cosmetic surgery may be at the beginning of that journey or anywhere along the route but it’s never an isolated event. Surgery to create a more youthful and improved appearance must be integrated into a complete lifestyle and wellness program.”

Exercise unlocks Stem Cells in your Muscles!

Posted on March 1, 2011 at 5:47 am

We’ve all read, heard and seen enough information to know that regular exercise is essential for a healthy body. What you might not know is that researchers have been busily seeking ways to increase longevity of muscle groups, to delay the muscle shrinkage that comes with aging and sedentary lifestyle.

Dafna Benayahu, of the Tel Aviv University in Israel, and his research colleagues studied a rat population in the lab to learn whether endurance exercise would increase the number of muscle stem cells, which are cells that decline as humans age, leading to muscle weakness in the elderly.

They compared the performance of rats of different ages and sexes, and found that the number of muscle stem cells (called satellite cells) increased after the rats ran on a treadmill for 20 minutes a day over a 13-week period.

The younger rats showed a 20% to 35% increase in the average number of stem cells per muscle fiber retained, but the older rats benefited even more, with a 33% to 47% increase in stem cells!

Further, the team found that endurance exercise improved the levels of “spontaneous locomotion.” Spontaneous locomotion is simply the urge to get up and move around and possibly even exercise as opposed to being more sedentary, which is common in the elderly.

The researchers are hopeful that this study can help them identify new ways to increase muscle stem cells in humans that would help maintain more muscle strength as we age.

Study Says: Breast Implants do not negatively affect breast cancer survival rates

Posted on February 24, 2011 at 11:05 am

Although it has been observed that women with breast implants actually have a marginally lower rate of breast cancer as compared to peer groups of women in the general population, occasionally a patient will express a concern to me that the presence of breast implants might make her mammograms more difficult to read and, therefore, lead to a lowered chance to identify breast cancer in its earliest stages. A new study puts this concern to rest.

The recently reported long term study in Canada shows that women with breast implants who go on to develop breast cancer have the same survival statistics as women without implants who go on to develop breast cancer. As shown in this study, the presence of breast implants did not lead to a poorer outcome if breast cancer is identified.

Dr. Paul LoVerme Recognized in Saint Barnabas “I Love My Doctor” Campaign

Posted on November 30, 2010 at 4:39 pm

In a feel good campaign known as “I Love My Doctor”, Saint Barnabas Medical Center asked members of their community to write in and recognize their outstanding physicians. Patients and their family members were asked to share any stories or personal experiences that exemplify what was extraordinary about their physician’s service to them, their families and their communities.

A phenomenal breast reconstruction patient of Dr. LoVerme’s, Christina Kraus, decided to share her story which was selected for publishing by Saint Barnabas. Christina writes,

“I believe Dr. Paul LoVerme is more than just a doctor. He is an EXTRAORDINARY person. I feel more than lucky to have met Dr. LoVerme and his staff. They will always be part of my family and I will never forget what they have done for all of us. I believe every person enters your life for a particular reason. Some to teach, some to guide, and some to help. He has done all these things and more for my family and I will be eternally grateful.”

We have included a link to her full narrative below. What an honor to be part of such an incredible family.
