Gynocomastia

Posted on September 26, 2008 at 1:37 pm

Gynocomastia is a condition in men where they actually develop breast tissue. All men have breast tissue naturally but it doesn’t develop. When it develops it may either be fat or it may be glandular. When it’s just fatty tissue I use vaser liposuction in order to remove that fat through very small incisions usually in the arm pit. This gives a much better contour to the chest and allows men to be able to take of their shirt, wear different clothes, and really enhance their appearance. At times when breast tissue needs to be removed I make a small incision half way around the nipple which is hidden right at the border of the nipple and the normal colored skin. That way through a very small incision I can remove the gland and achieve that nice contour to the chest. And often it’s combined with liposuction in the love handle area because that’s the other most common region that men require or want liposuction.

Breast Reconstruction

Posted on at 1:37 pm

We work with women who have had mastectomies or who have just been diagnosed with cancer and may need to have a mastectomy. We work with the breast surgeon and oftentimes will do their reconstruction at the same time. It’s important when a woman has a diagnosis of breast cancer that she talk with a plastic surgeon regarding the possibilities of breast reconstruction. This may range from implants, tissue expansion, which means stretching that skin that’s still left in order to make a new breast. Or it may include flaps, taking skin and fat from the abdomen, or from the back, and moving it to the breast to create a new mound. Most women are very satisfied with their reconstruction. It makes them feel much better, it makes them feel whole again after their surgery.

Face Lift

Posted on at 1:37 pm

Face lift procedure is a very individualized procedure. It may include brow lift, eyelid surgery, face lift, and neck lift. Or it may just include for instance the mid face lift. One of the things that I pride myself on is obtaining very natural results with incisions that are well hidden so that women or men can wear their hair short, they can wear it back, and they don’t see the incisions. The incisions are in the hairline. They come down in front of the ear but behind this little part of the ear so it comes inside the ear and hides the incision. And behind the ear they stay right in the crease line. If I’m doing mid facial surgery the incisions may be inside the mouth so that they also are hidden. It’s a very meticulous type of surgery and it’s surgery that I really enjoy doing because the results are visible not only to the patient but to everyone else. And therefore it has to be a very pleasing, natural result.
One of the things that I wouldn’t want somebody to say is, Mrs. Jones who did your face lift? I’d much rather have them say, you look great, what did you do, did you lose some weight? Because they really should have that natural appearance following their face lift. It’s surgery that I most commonly perform in our ambulatory surgery facility that’s fully accredited so it’s done in the privacy of our office with my dedicated staff to take care of you and to follow you through the whole healing process.

Dermal Fillers

Posted on at 1:36 pm

Dermal fillers are much different than Botox. Whereas Botox weakens muscles, dermo fillers actually fill crease lines. And there are a number of different dermal fillers and there are advantages and disadvantages to each one. And actually every year new fillers are becoming available. What we’re striving to do is find a filler that’s very long lasting but gives a very natural appearance. Juvoderm and restolin are two of the most common dermal fillers. They are hiloronic gel that’s injected in the bottom part of the skin which plumps it very nicely. Radies is another common filler which lasts a little bit longer and we use in nasolabial folds but we don’t use it in the lip for augmentation very often because sometimes it can produce small lumps. Sculptra is a little bit different, it’s not a dermal filler but it’s a volumizer. It’s for people that have sunken cheeks or deficient fat in the central portion of their face, where a mid face lift may not give them the results that they need or they may want to avoid surgery. Sculptra over time helps your body build collagen and give it much more natural, fuller appearance to the face. So usually when someone comes in to thinking about wrinkles I discuss all of these different types of fillers with them. There are also fillers now that are permanent that we can use, but I never use them on the first time the person’s having a filler. Better to see what the results are, and if you like it then we can go to the more permanent filler.

Light and Laser Treatments

Posted on at 1:36 pm

In the office we use a number of different laser- and light-based therapies. Intense pulse light, commonly known as IPL, is one of those treatments. With an IPL treatment we can reduce redness and brown spots on the face. We do what we call a photo rejuvenation which gives a much clearer completion. It can help with rosachia, and while not curing rosachia it will get rid of some of those small vessels and redness, especially in the cheeks, nose, and forehead area, to give a much clearer appearance to the skin. The recover time from these are very short. For redness it’s as little as a few hours. For brown spots, the brown spots may be much darker, but within 5-7 days they sluff off and therefore the spot is gone. But there’s no real down time, there’s no open wounds, there’s no surgery involved, and there’s no anesthesia involved with these procedures.
Following a series of IPL procedures the skin will be much more refreshed, the complexion will be much more even, red spots or vessels will be gone, but patients should also continue to take care of their skin and sun blocks are one of the most important things they can do to maintain that new fresh appearance that we create.
