Blepharoplasty (Eyelid Lift)
What is Eyelid Lift Surgery?
Eyelid lift (or blepharoplasty) is the preferred treatment for removing bags under the eyes or correcting drooping eyelids or extra skin on the upper lids, conditions that can add years to your appearance and even impair your vision. Since the eyes are among the most prominent facial features, eyelid rejuvenation can significantly improve a person’s appearance for a more well-rested, youthful look. For patients who are experiencing impaired vision due to drooping eyelids, blepharoplasty can also restore the full field of vision and enhance overall quality of life (and therefore may be covered by insurance).

What Are the Benefits of Eyelid Lift Surgery?
An eyelid lift is designed to remove excess fatty tissue and skin from the upper and/or lower eyelids, as well as tighten underlying muscles that contribute to sagging. From a cosmetic perspective, patients can reverse common signs of facial aging around the eyes that can cause a tired, stressed, or even depressed look. From a functional perspective, blepharoplasty can ensure your field of vision is completely clear of obstruction due to sagging upper eyelids. Most patients opt to combine an upper and lower eyelid lift for a more dramatic rejuvenation.
Each individual’s eyelids age differently, which calls for a custom-tailored approach for blepharoplasty. To deliver the best possible results for each patient, Dr. LoVerme develops a customized surgical plan based on his or her needs and cosmetic goals. The results of eyelid lift surgery can create a look that is dramatically improved—the area around the eyes may appear smoother and younger, while the facial expressions often take on a more relaxed, lively, and renewed overall look.
Which Other Procedures Are Often Performed with Eyelid Lift Surgery?
Eyelid lift is often performed in conjunction with a midface lift to correct contour irregularities between the lid/cheek junction for an optimal outcome. Facial fat transfer procedures, which use fat collected from the patient’s own body, are also commonly incorporated with eyelid lift surgery to fill hollows beneath the eyes and add soft, natural-looking volume to areas of the face for a smoother, more youthful look. Upper eyelid lift can also be combined with a lateral brow lift to improve a heavy appearance and can often improve your visual field that may be blocked. This can be accomplished with no additional incisions using a transbleph endotine.
Eyelid lift surgery can also be combined with other surgical procedures, such as a facelift or forehead lift, or non-surgical injectable treatments, like BOTOX® Cosmetic or dermal fillers, to enhance the final results.
Who Is a Candidate for Eyelid Lift Surgery?
Ideal candidates for eyelid lift surgery have excess skin and/or fatty tissue causing sagging from the upper or lower eyelids. Patients who experience impaired vision from drooping upper eyelids are also ideal candidates for this procedure. During the consultation process, Dr. LoVerme will perform a physical examination, review your medical history, and discuss your personal goals to determine if eyelid lift is the right procedure for you. If you are a good candidate for a blepharoplasty, the procedure can be customized to meet your individual needs and expectations and will be performed in our AAAASF accredited and New Jersey licensed surgical suite.
What Should I Expect During the Eyelid Lift Procedure?
Eyelid surgery is typically performed under local anesthesia and sedation. The procedure can be performed on the upper eyelids, the lower eyelids, or both during the same procedure. Dr. LoVerme will make incisions along the natural creases and lines of your eyelids, through which excess fat and skin are removed.
Upper Eyelid Surgery
Upper eyelid surgery can excise loose skin and fat deposits from the upper lid, smoothing the area and reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. This procedure can also restore a more youthful contour to the upper eyelid. Upper eyelid surgery is also performed for patients who have vision impairment due to drooping upper lids. Dr. LoVerme is careful to leave enough skin and fatty tissue to prevent an overly “done” look and preserve a natural, symmetrical appearance.
Lower Eyelid Surgery
Lower eyelid surgery can eliminate excess skin and fat causing bags and puffiness under the eyes to create a smoother, more youthful appearance. Frequently, fat deposits can even be repositioned to fill in hollow tear troughs for further rejuvenation. Structural laxity of the lower eyelid can also be corrected with this procedure and can occasionally achieve a “mini cheek lift” for certain patients. A midface lift is often combined with lower eyelid surgery.
Transconjunctival Eyelid Lift
If there are bags without excess skin, an incision can be made inside the eyelid to remove fat pads, leaving no visible scar. Often, a chemical peel or FRAX laser skin treatment is performed in combination with this transconjunctival lift to tighten skin and avoid the need for an incision and scar.

What Is the Recovery after Eyelid Lift Like?
Mild swelling, bruising, and some discomfort are part of the recovery process, and usually can be alleviated with cold compresses, elevation, and appropriate medication. Most patients are back to their normal routines within days, although complete recovery may take a few weeks. Sutures are removed five to seven days after the procedure.
What Do Eyelid Lift Results Look Like?
Age: 47 / Ht: 5’2” / Wt: 105 lbs
After about three months, the incision lines become virtually indistinguishable and patients can fully enjoy their revitalized appearance. It is common for patients to tell us that friends and family have commented on how rested and refreshed they look following recovery. Because of the natural-looking results that Dr. LoVerme strives to provide, most observers do not realize our patients have undergone cosmetic surgery.
