Dr. Paul LoVerme details the unique intricacies of the non-surgical fat reduction treatment known as CoolSculpting®.
Verona, NJ — “CoolSculpting® is a non-surgical fat reduction procedure designed to eliminate pockets of excess fat buildup in the hips, abdomen, and lower back regions,” writes New Jersey plastic surgeon Paul LoVerme, MD to begin a recent blog post. The entry – titled, Benefits of CoolSculpting® – goes on to identify and briefly expand upon some distinct advantages the innovative treatment can provide patients interested in fat reduction, including:
- A noninvasive treatment
- A short treatment session
- Minimal, if any, discomfort
- Little to no downtime
According to another blog post – this one titled, How CoolSculpting® Works: A Procedural Overview – the CoolSculpting® procedure takes about hour to complete, per treatment area. In preparation for one’s treatment, the New Jersey plastic surgeon encourages patients to wear comfortable clothes and bring something – such as an iPad, book, or magazine – to occupy themselves during their session.
In contrast to burning, shattering, or extracting fat cells through surgical means, CoolSculpting® employs a targeted cooling process called cryolipolysis that literally freezes fat cells to the point of elimination without damaging surrounding healthy tissues. Once frozen, the fat cells die and exit the body through natural processes. In just one treatment session, Dr. LoVerme notes that about 20-25% of targeted fat cells can be eliminated.
“Ultimately,” Dr. LoVerme concludes the former of the two blog posts, “it is important to note that CoolSculpting® is not a weight loss solution for people who are overweight; however, it can be a very effective option for patients at or close to their ideal weight who are interested in addressing stubborn fat pockets around the midsection.”

CoolSculpting® is a non-surgical fat reduction procedure designed to eliminate pockets of excess fat buildup in the hips, abdomen, and lower back regions. Good candidates for this innovative treatment are those who have noticeable problem areas where they’d like to get rid of stubborn bulges. As a non-surgical procedure, CoolSculpting® can offer patients several distinct benefits, some of which include:
- A non-invasive treatment – no knives, needles, anesthesia, or scarring
- Very little treatment time – typically takes about one hour per treatment area to complete
- Little to no discomfort – patients often bring an iPad or something to read during treatment
- No time necessary for recuperation – patients can often return to their daily routines immediately
Ultimately, it is important to note that CoolSculpting® is not a weight loss solution for people who are overweight; however, it can be a very effective option for patients at or close to their ideal weight who are interested in addressing stubborn fat pockets around the midsection.

The CoolSculpting® procedure generally takes about an hour per treatment area to complete. In fact, many patients receive treatment during their lunch hour, and then return to work immediately afterwards.
Fortunately, CoolSculpting® doesn’t burn, shatter, or extract any cells. Instead, the procedure uses a targeted cooling process, known as cryolipolysis, that kills the fat cells underneath the skin, literally freezing them to the point of elimination. With this controlled cooling technique, only fat cells are frozen, while healthy skin cells remain unharmed. Once crystallized, the targeted fat cells die and are naturally eliminated from the body.
To prepare for a CoolSculpting® session, patients should wear comfortable clothing and bring an iPad or reading material to keep themselves occupied for the amount of time they will be spending with us. CoolSculpting® generally gets rid of 20-25% of targeted fat cells after just one treatment, so the need for additional treatments will be decided depending on the patient’s satisfaction at their two-month follow up visit.
The most common side-effects include bruising, swelling, and tenderness in the treated area, but these will typically resolve within a week or two. Patients may also feel a temporary dulling of sensation in the treatment area, but this too is common and should dissipate over time.
In the end, the procedure is completely non-surgical, so patients can typically return to normal activities immediately. Some patients experience redness, minor bruising, tingling, numbness, or discomfort in the treated area, but as I previously expressed, these effects are temporary.
