What Is Labiaplasty?
Labiaplasty is a procedure for vaginal rejuvenation which focuses on reducing, reshaping, and/or repairing the labia minora for improved aesthetics and comfort. Childbirth, aging, and genetics are often the main causes of large labia minora, and for some women this excess tissue can interfere with movement, daily activities, and sexual intercourse. Many women opt to undergo labiaplasty for purely cosmetic reasons to restore confidence and satisfaction in the appearance of their sensitive areas. At The LoVerme Center for Plastic Surgery, labiaplasty is sometimes included as part of a comprehensive mommy makeover treatment plan.
What Are the Benefits of Labiaplasty?
The labiaplasty procedure can accomplish a wide range of improvements to the female genital region, based on each patient’s personal needs and goals. The benefits of labiaplasty can include:
- Reduction in the size and shape of the labia minora, with the goal of creating a more balanced appearance with regard to the labia majora.
- Revitalization of the external female genitalia—creating a more youthful-looking and rejuvenated labia minora.
- Repair of labia minora that has been stretched or torn due to childbirth, injury, or other circumstances.
- Reduction of physical discomfort—during sexual intercourse, exercise, and/or other activities—that is associated with excess labia minora tissue.
- Renewed confidence in the appearance of the external female genitalia.
During your consultation with Dr. LoVerme, he will take the time to perform a comprehensive examination, discuss your concerns, and determine whether labiaplasty is the appropriate procedure for achieving your goals. If you are a candidate for labiaplasty, Dr. LoVerme will develop a personalized surgical plan to suit your unique needs and achieve satisfactory results.
How Is the Labiaplasty Procedure Performed?
Labiaplasty can be performed with both local and topical anesthesia or with sedation, to keep you comfortable and relaxed throughout the surgical process. During the labiaplasty procedure, Dr. LoVerme most often uses the “wedge technique” to remove excess tissue and reshape the labia minora; however, he may opt to perform the marginal trim method if it is deemed more appropriate for your procedure. With the wedge method, Dr. LoVerme removes triangular shaped sections of tissue to reduce the overall size of the labia and create a more natural edge and appearance of the labia. For some patients, the marginal trim technique—which involves removal of the outside edge of the labia—is preferred. During your consultation, Dr. LoVerme can discuss the benefits and risks of each technique and explain the surgical plan that is indicated for your needs.
What Can I Expect During Recovery from Labiaplasty?
Some swelling, bruising, and soreness are common following labiaplasty, and discomfort can typically be controlled with Tylenol® and ice packs. After surgery, it is important to follow all of the post-operative care instructions that Dr. LoVerme provides. It is also critical to take and apply all medications as prescribed to prevent infection. Most patients are able to return to work after a few days of recovery, but it is important to abstain from sexual activity and vigorous exercise until further into your healing process. During your follow-up appointments, Dr. LoVerme will keep you apprised of your recovery progress and will let you know when it is time to resume certain activities.
How Much Does Labiaplasty Cost?

Following your consultation with Dr. LoVerme, you will receive a comprehensive cost quote for your surgical plan and any other ancillary fees.
