Fat Transfer

What is a Fat Transfer?

Fat transfer is a procedure that involves extracting your own fat from an area of the body with adequate or excess fat and transplanting the harvested and purified fat cells to another area of the body and/or the face. Fat transfers can add volume to depleted areas, soften the results of implant procedures, and create shape for customized contour enhancement. The most common fat transfer areas are:

  • Cheeks
  • Hollows under the eyes
  • Nasolabial folds
  • Buttocks (Brazilian Butt Lift)
  • Breasts

This procedure performed by Paul LoVerme, MD not only enhances these targeted treatment areas, but patients also benefit from liposuction contouring of the “donor” site, which is typically the abdomen, thighs, or back.

Fat Transfer for Breasts

Women are often interested in fat transfers to the breasts to:

  • Soften the visible edges of a breast implant used in reconstruction or augmentation
  • Further enhance a breast implant
  • Achieve a modest one-cup increase in breast size without breast implants

Breast Augmentation with Fat Transfer

Breast augmentation with fat transfer is done after pre-expansion wearing the Brava® breast expansion device for three to four weeks. Surgery is performed on an outpatient basis (either at the hospital or in our AAAASF-accredited surgical suite), under local anesthesia with sedation or general anesthesia. After the procedure, you will experience temporary discomfort, swelling, and/or numbness. Most women are able to resume regular activity within a week. Vigorous activity or exercise can be resumed after approximately four to six weeks. You will be instructed to wear a support bra, as well as a binder or a girdle, along with some foam padding on the “donor” area to assure a smooth result. Over the first three to six months there will be some absorption of the transplanted fat; however, the liposuction results are unaffected and can remain permanent with maintenance of proper diet and exercise.

Fat Transfer for Facial Rejuvenation

Fat injection is an excellent option for facial rejuvenation. Fat transfer to the face is often done in combination with a facelift or eyelid lift (blepharoplasty), or can be performed as a separate procedure. The most commonly treated areas are the folds from the nose to the mouth (nasolabial folds), wrinkles around the mouth, the cheek bone region, and the hollows that appear under the eyes as we age. Fat transfer can also be used to enlarge the lips or to smooth out lip wrinkles.

Ordinarily, only small volumes of fat are needed, thus requiring only local anesthesia and modest removal of fat from the abdomen. If you have fat under the chin, this site may also be used for harvesting and gives a double facial enhancement! The procedure may also be combined with lipo-contouring of the abdomen, flanks, or thighs. After extraction, the purified fat is prepared and injected in very small pearls to assure permanency. Discomfort is minimal.

Post-procedure, you will have tape over the injected area for three to five days. There will be modest bruising and swelling for a few days. Since the injection sites are small, you will be able to wear make-up as soon as the tape is removed.

Fat Transfer for Buttocks Augmentation

Fat transfer to the buttocks is commonly referred to as a Brazilian Butt Lift (BBL). It is performed in conjunction with “hi-definition” liposculpting by Dr. LoVerme. Using fat transfer techniques, Dr. LoVerme is able to enhance the projection, shape, and/or size of the buttocks to create the customized silhouette each patient desires. Unlike buttocks augmentation with implants, BBL with fat transfer uses very small incisions, which can result in very minimal post-surgical scarring. Furthermore, fat transfer techniques allow Dr. LoVerme  to create results that are soft, natural, and beautifully balanced.
