Fat transfer is a procedure that removes your own fat from a “bad” area and transplants it to enhance other area(s). The most common fat transfer areas are the face (cheeks; hollows under the eyes; and nasolabial folds), buttocks (Brazilian Butt Lift), and the breasts. This procedure from our top plastic surgeon at The Loverme Center can not only enhance these areas, but you can also benefit from liposuction of the abdomen, thighs or back.
Women are often interested in fat transfer to the breast to soften the visible edges of an implant used in reconstruction or augmentation, to further enhance an implant, or to achieve a modest increase in breast size. Breast size can usually be permanently increased one cup size after a fat transfer procedure without implants.
Breast augmentation with fat transfer is done after pre-expansion wearing the Brava® breast expansion device for three to four weeks. You can learn more about this advanced device by visiting http://www.brava.com/home.asp.
Surgery is performed as an outpatient at the hospital or in our AAAASF-accredited surgical suite under local anesthesia with sedation or general anesthesia. You will experience temporary discomfort, swelling, and/or numbness. Most women resume regular activity within a week. Vigorous activity or exercise can be resumed after four to six weeks. You will wear a support bra as well as binder or a girdle with some foam padding on the “donor” area to assure a smooth result. Over the first three to six months there will be some absorption. The liposuction results are unaffected and are permanent with proper diet and exercise.
Fat injection is an excellent option for facial rejuvenation. Fat transfer to the face is often done in combination with a facelift or eyelid lift (blepharoplasty), or can be performed as a separate procedure. The most commonly treated areas are the folds from the nose to the mouth (nasolabial folds), wrinkles around the mouth, the cheek bone region, and the hollows that appear under the eyes as we age. Fat transfer can also be used to enlarge the lips or to smooth out lip wrinkles.
Ordinarily, only small volumes of fat are needed, thus requiring only local anesthesia and modest removal of fat from the abdomen. If you have fat under the chin, this site may also be used for harvesting and gives a double facial enhancement! The procedure may also be combined with lipo-contouring of the abdomen, flanks or thighs. After extraction, the purified fat is prepared and injected in very small pearls to assure permanency. Discomfort is minimal.
Post-procedure, you will have tape over the injected area for three to five days. There will be modest bruising and swelling for a few days. Since the injection sites are small, you will be able to wear make-up as soon as the tape is removed.
Fat grafting can be a very effective rejuvenation and body recontouring technique, with results that are natural-looking and long-lasting. If you would like to learn more, or to schedule a consultation with Dr. LoVerme to discuss your options, please contact us today.
